Peace Walk (Pugwash to Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada)
The 80 km Peace Walk began today in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, a small fishing village on the Atlantic coast with remarkable historical importance as the birthplace of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (1957). Inspired by the Russell–Einstein Manifesto, these conferences brought scientists from both East and West together at the height of the Cold War to confront the dangers of nuclear weapons and promote dialogue for peace. Led by Nobel laureate Joseph Rotblat, the initiative later earned the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize, and today Pugwash stands as a global symbol of peace, disarmament, and the responsible use of science—showing how even a small village can spark worldwide change.
This walk is being held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima nuclear attack by covering 80 km, symbolizing both remembrance and commitment to a peaceful future. On August 6, 1945, Hiroshima was devastated when the world’s first atomic bomb was dropped, killing over 140,000 people by the end of that year. Entire neighborhoods were reduced to ashes, and generations have since lived with the painful consequences of radiation exposure. Remembering Hiroshima means honoring the lives lost and reaffirming humanity’s responsibility to ensure such a tragedy is never repeated.
The journey is organized by Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace, under the leadership of Kathrin Winkler.
The day began with great energy after a peaceful night’s rest in Pugwash, following a youth peace conference the day before. Many inspiring friends and peace advocates joined the walk, including Jill Carr-Harris, Reva Joshee, Bonnie and Jon, Ann, Ajit Rajagopalan, Su, David Fletcher, Debbei, Paul, Sarah Morgen, Elizabeth, and Mary Ann.
