Day 14: Blog

I spent the last two days in Fresno, California—a vibrant city in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley known for its rich agricultural heritage, diverse culture, and warm community spirit. Fresno’s location amid expansive farmlands and its proximity to the Sierra Nevada mountains provide a scenic backdrop.

During my stay, I was warmly welcomed by Maheshwar Jani and Shruti Behen. They treated me like family—offering delicious Indian food and joining me on a leisurely walk around the city. Their kindness and support have been invaluable to my mission.

I also had the honor of meeting Gandhian activist Sudarshan Kapoor at Mirch Masala Restaurant. A professor emeritus at California State University Fresno, Kapoor has dedicated several decades to teaching and advocating nonviolence. A passionate supporter of social justice—including the African-American struggle—and a practitioner of Gandhian philosophy, he once walked alongside Vinoba Bhave in Punjab during the Bhoodan Movement. His lifelong commitment to nonviolence and peace truly inspired me.

On Sunday, Sudarshan organized a program for me at the Fresno Center for Nonviolence in downtown Fresno. The center, which brings together community leaders and activists dedicated to justice and peace, provided an ideal platform for me to share my message of nonviolence—a message that resonates deeply in these times of global conflict and climate crisis. I was honored to be interviewed by two local TV stations, and my interview was broadcast last night in the Fresno area.

This morning, I began a 26 km peace walk starting from the historic courthouse in downtown Fresno. Walking through a city that sits amidst the fertile lands of the San Joaquin Valley.

I am now resting at a beautiful Gurudwara in Selma, a town with a thriving Sikh community. The Gurudwara’s warm welcome, along with the community’s appreciation for my journey, has been a continual source of encouragement.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Sudarshan Kapoor, Maheshwar Jani, and Shruti Behen for their kindness and support. Their generous spirit has made these two days in Fresno truly memorable.

Though my body is still recovering from 12 consecutive days of walking, I remain hopeful and determined. I look forward to the challenge of walking 40+ km tomorrow, continuing my journey of peace.

With gratitude,
Slowman Nitin
